The command and control operations of the U.S. Coast Guard base at Buxton are now calling Carteret County home. It's the biggest step to date, in an ongoing effort to consolidate the Cape Hatteras group command with it's sister station two hundred miles South at Fort Macon. Roughly half of the station's 50 personnel will be transferred to Fort Macon, with others moving to other posts. A field office is being planned in Nags Head to support the other Outer Banks Coast Guard facilities.
