It's a Past You Shouldn't Forget

It's part of Eastern Carolina's past that many would rather forget. But slavery shaped the past and possibly the future in one local town. James City in Craven County is where the history of the slave trade and the transition to freedom began for thousands of African Americans during the Civil War. James City's Trent River settlement became one of America’s first and largest freemen's colonies, and parts of that past are being preserved by dedicated history lovers.
