Former Sheriff Headed to Court

Stripped of duty, a judge has ruled that former Washington County Sheriff Stanley James be formally removed from the office of sheriff and await trial on embezzlement charges. The judge ruled Thursday after hearing three days of testimony from different witnesses.

James will now face a jury to decide whether he is guilty of federal embezzlement charges. In the meantime, the district attorney says county commissioners now have to appoint someone to fill the position to the end of this term through 2006.
