Cleaning Up Old Landfill

An Outer Banks civic organization is taking on an ambitious project by cleaning up an old landfill on Roanoke Island.

The Manteo Rotary Club wants to turn the 13 acre property on Bowsertown Road into a community resource, like a park or even affordable housing. The site was a landfill from
1960 to 1982. It now serves as a transfer station, where local trash is dropped off, then trucked out of Dare County. Testing will be done to make sure the site is environmentally safe.
