Ending Homelessness In Pitt County

Could you imagine in one decade, no one will ever have to live on the streets of Pitt County? That's the mission of a new task force which met tonight in Greenville.

50 members of the community along with local leaders came together for the first blue ribbon task force to end homelessness in the county.

This is a ten year commitment to do more than just "house" the homeless but to get them into their own homes. President Bush allotted four point four billion dollars last year to end the homeless problem. His liaison of the inter agency council on homelessness led the charge to encourage members to end this public injustice.

In the coming months there will be community forums to get input on this issue.

Good idea, but must make sure that they become productive members of society as they are getting these homes. Also if drugs of any kind are in their system, they should automatically be disqualified. There is a difference between people who have had a bad string of events happen and those that did it themselves. Take the good ones, educate them, get them a job and then they can help pay for the next one getting help. I agree with some of the other comments about not spending enough aid at home where we need it. Everyone needs to realize that instead of spending 10 million in some other country, help the ones that are here and need it.

I am curious to know how government intends to house everyone that does not have a home considering tax and cost of living increases not to mention when you actually get this person in a home that obvious could not afford one in the first place they still have to eat, utilitys, etc etc. Who will pay for all of this? The hard working tax payers. Will it ever end that the tax payers and law abiding citizens have to be punished and have to pay for failure of others. I do believe however we should be and should have been taking care of our own right here at home rather than the billions we have spent on other countrys for people that hate americans. Let me rephrase that statement, billions our government is spending on other countrys. All that has been done in the past is temporary fixes with no root cause solution put in place. Throwing money out in the wrong places does not fix the problem, when will government understand this simple fact.

I think the first priority should be to find them work. Then if they can prove they are trying to improve their lifestyle, then help should be available for them to get started on a new life.
