Marine biologists say it's too early to say why 34 whales washed ashore the Outer Banks this weekend. A massive collection effort that wrapped up Monday may provide clues.
Twenty-four Pilot Whales were discovered dead Saturday morning along a five-mile stretch of beach North of Oregon Inlet. Seven more had to be euthanized.
In addition, a nine-foot Minkee Whale was found emaciated in Corolla, and two Dwarf Sperm Whales washed up in Buxton.
In about two weeks, scientists will start getting back data about the potential for disease and any other possible causes.
