a 20 year old Pitt County man is in jail, accused in a carjacking just before noon on Monday.
Tobias Brummell is charged with kidnapping, robbery with a dangerous weapon and theft of a motor vehicle after today's carjacking.
Deputies spent most of the afternoon searching for the gunman who carjacked a woman outside a Bethel gas station.
Deputies say it happened just before lunch at the Country Mart on Highway 11. They say a woman was pumping gas when a man got into her car and demanded she leave at gunpoint.
Deputies say the two began to leave the parking lot when the woman had second thoughts. She jumped out of the car. The gunman, deputies say, continued down Highway 11.
A short time later deputies spotted the stolen car at Staton Mill & Pug Moore Roads. Witnesses told authorities they saw the gunman run into the woods.
Deputies blocked off the area, bringing in a sheriff's helicopter and tracking dogs.
Their search failed to find the gunman, but several hours later deputies say they made a break in the case. Deputies say Brummell lives not far from where the car was ditched. Investigators say his fingerprints were found inside the woman's car.
The victim in the carjacking was shaken up, but deputies say is otherwise okay after her ordeal.
