You have an opportunity this weekend to learn about the role of African- Americans in the Civil War. The Cultural Heritage Museum in Kinston is hosting the United States Colored Troops Institute Symposium. The event honors the 9,000 African-Americans from North Carolina who served in the war. Organizers of the event say there's been very little told about the role African-Americans played in the war, so they thought it was important to have a recognition of the efforts of those troops and those men that fought for freedom. Events are planned throughout the weekend. There is a fee for admission.
