Gone Phishing

Phishing is the latest high tech way to steal your identity.

According to State Attorney General Roy Cooper, scammers are sending phony e-mails that claim to come from legitimate companies.

Cooper says the e-mails find ways to lure victims to give out their personal and financial information. And when that happens, you have officially been phished.

Cooper says they'll try to scare you, they'll say there's a problem with your credit, and they're going to close down your bank account. They also tell say you need to respond to keep this from happening.

Cooper says, whatever you do, don't fall for it. Cooper estimates between 900,000 and 1.5-million people have provided confidential information to phishers.

If you've been phished, call the State Consumer Protection Hotline at 1-877-NO SCAM.
