Eastern North Carolina fishermen used to make a killing working in the industry. Now they say the regulations imposed by the federal government is killing their livelihood. Those who fish for scallops in particular say the federal government requires them to install a $300.00 a month satellite tracking device on their boats. The device also costs them a few thousand dollars just to buy. Leslie Daniels, a co-owner of the William Smith Seafood Company in Beaufort, Carteret County, says it doesn't make any sense paying for a service just to regulate yourself. Fishermen say the federal government's regulation doesn't change the price of scallops, or other types of seafood at the market.
