The tsunami may have happened thousands of miles away but a doctor right here in Eastern Carolina will be part of the relief effort.

Doctor Thomas Kerkering, Chief of the Infectious Disease division at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, leaves Saturday for the long journey to Aceh, an isolated area on the island of Sumatra relief workers so far have been unable to reach.

Kerkering is making the trip on behalf of the Christian Children's Fund. Kerkering says something that will help the relief effort tremendously are seven ships the United States sent to the region capable of purifying up to 90,000 gallons of water per day.
