The second court hearing for the 14-year-old Columbia High School student charged with the murder of her twin newborns was continued by a judge Tuesday morning, due to weather conditions.
But in light of this tragedy, is something in place to keep this type of thing from happening in the future? District Attorney Seth Edwards says yes. One answer lies in the "Safe Surrender" law. It allows people to give a child up to any responsible adult within seven days of a child's birth. Edwards says the biggest problem with the law is the lack of education.
In the meantime, the 14-year-old in this latest case will remain in custody. The next court hearing is set for January 5 of next year.
