Six debates have been scheduled for the Democratic candidates for lieutenant governor over the next three months.
Canton Mayor Pat Smathers said Tuesday he sought the debates as way to boost discourse in the campaign.
The North Carolina Federation of College Democrats set up debates for Smathers and three other Democrats on college campuses starting January 19 in Asheville.
Winston-Salem city councilman Dan Besse has also committed to the debate schedule. Durham attorney Hampton Dellinger also said he would participate in all six debates. It wasn't immediately clear whether State Senator Walter Dalton would participate.
