Attorneys for three former Duke lacrosse players cleared of rape charges have added outgoing Durham city manager Patrick Baker as a defendant.
According to a federal court filing made Tuesday in Greensboro,
Baker was significantly involved with decisions to push ahead with
the rape allegations despite a lack of evidence.
The filing came as Baker said he would step down as city manager
on June 30 to become city attorney, according to a story posted on
The News and Observer of Raleigh's Web site.
The amended complaint detailed a meeting on March 29, 2006 in
which Baker, former police chief Steve Chalmers and other senior
city and police officials met with two police investigators. It
says the investigators were ordered or otherwise pressured to go
forward with the case.
