Managers of the Charlotte mall where an accident killed a woman and a portion of the parking deck collapsed say the garage will reopen Saturday.
Managers of SouthPark Mall said the parking garage that's on the
southwest side will reopen after being closed since Thursday's
accident. Repairs will continue on the damaged area.
In the accident, a woman's car collided with a support wall.
Inspectors say the impact of the vehicle traveling at a high rate
speed cause the collapse of one bay of the garage's third level.
Police identified the victim as 64-year-old Shirley Sutton
Hawkins of Charlotte. Police said a small portion of the three-tier
deck collapsed, and the driver's car fell through the opening.
The Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner's Office says Hawkins
died because of a known medical condition. The office says it can't
release details of the condition.
Randy Wilson is with THP Inc., a structuring engineering and
parking garage consulting firm. He says an inspection showed that
the garage's integrity wasn't damaged.
