A fatal fire in Ayden early Sunday morning took the lives of a grandfather and two of his grandchildren.

Rescue officials say the call came in just before 5 a.m. Sunday on East Eighth Street. Fire officials say the back part of the home was engulfed in flames when they arrived.

Pitt County fire officials say the blaze began in the den but at this point are still looking for a cause.

Both members of the neighborhood and rescue workers are trying to get over what happened. Rescuers will spend time with counselors to help them cope.

Authorities say the grandmother was the only survivor. She was taken to Pitt County Memorial Hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.
