Detectives Hunt, Kill Deer That Ate Flowers In Neighborhood

Three Smithfield police detectives have been cleared to hunt white-tailed deer that are eating neighborhood plants.

Last year, officers killed 25 deer in the woods near the manicured lawns of South Smithfield. The deer are said to eat plants and flowers such as hostas, azaleas and acuba.

One resident, Jim Wilson, says the detectives should be fighting
criminals not flower-eating deer.

State biologist Joe Folta says there isn't a state law barring police from hunting, but Folta says he had recommended that bowhunters or licensed sharpshooters be used.

Police Chief Steve Gillikin says the operation costs less than $3,000, compared to $100 per kill for professional hunters.

He says the meat goes to needy families, though officers are allowed to keep one each.

My first thought is, do these officers have the appropiate hunting licenses required by the state of NC? Since they are allowed to keep one for themselves are they tagging the deer and reporting the kill as required by the state regulations? There are plenty of us that could leagally do this if allowed to do so and it would not cost the taxpayers anything!

Look you people need to use something beside the word REDNECK.I am a real redneck and we are not all like that. So show a little pride in yourself, use a new word. Can;t you spell anything else?

Sounds like a bunch of redneck, good ole boys to me. The homeowner has a responsibility to take care of his/her yard, not the local law enforcement.

There are deer repelents available for plants and shrubs that the owners of these "manicured" lawns can well afford, and not create "gamekeepers" of their local police force, and endanger others with stray shots. Money talks as usual I guess.

So they will be to busy killing deer, to help people in need. You can replace the flowers, but not people.
