One Plant Closes, Another Opens

The Unifi Plant in Kinston has shut down, putting more than 200 people out of a job during the holiday season. Unifi planned to cease operations no later than November 30. However, Lenoir County Economic Development officials say, the last day came early, on November 15.

The DuPont plant at the same location of the Unifi plant is still open and running. Lenoir County Economic Development officials say they're talking with DuPont to find a company to replace Unifi that would also be a good fit at the location.

Officials also say, some of the Unifi employees are finding work at CMI Plastics in Ayden. That plant opens Saturday. The company built a 70, 000-square-foot plant in Ayden when it moved its business from New Jersey to North Carolina. CMI says they'll hire 85 people off the bat, but expect to expand to 165 employees.
