In Beaufort County, one commissioner race may still be up for grabs.

County election officials began recounting votes Monday for the commissioner seat between Republican Stan Deatherage and Democrat Etles Henries. The winner of that special election will finish out the term for Carol Cochran, who resigned in August.

After an electronic recount Deatherage was still ahead by 17 votes. Election officials say Henries has until 5:00 p.m. Wednesday to decide if he wants nearly 20,000 ballots counted by hand, or concede the election.

On the state level, a judge has denied a candidate's request following decision 2004. Public instruction superintendent candidate Bill Fletcher sued the State Board of Elections to challenge provisional ballots.
