Woman Kills Attacking Rabid Fox

A New Bern woman, a friend, and her dog were attacked early Monday morning by a rabid fox. But instead of running, the woman took matters into her own hands, grabbing the fox and choking it to death.

Kathy Sunshine says she was walking for exercise on Forest Park Drive around 5:30 in the morning, when she suddenly had to defend herself against the fox. Sunshine says she managed to kill the animal, and then call authorities.

Animal control officials confirmed the fox had rabies. Sunshine says rabies crossed her mind, but she says the whole thing went by pretty fast. Residents in the area have been alerted about the potential of other rabid animals in the area.
