Building Up the Beach

More sand is on the way to one of North Carolina's most-popular beachfronts right here in Eastern Carolina.

Fort Macon State Park in Atlantic Beach is getting sand from Army Corps of Engineers efforts to dredge the Morehead City State Port channels.

A huge dredge in Beaufort Channel is pumping more than 700,000 cubic yards of sand onto the beach, which has suffered extensive erosion from recent storms.

Fort Macon gets more than 1,000,000 visits a year, tops in the state park system.
