Healthier Lunches for Your Children

Schools in several North Carolina counties are now trimming the fat from your children's lunch in favor of healthier food.

Schools in seven counties, including Pitt, will now serve more fruits and vegetables. A registered dietitian for the Pitt County school system says so many children are already overweight or at the risk of being overweight.

From now on, students will no longer see macaroni and cheese, lasagna, potato chips, or snack sweets on their lunch tray.

How serious is childhood obesity in our state? A 2003 study shows one out of every five children ages five to 11 is overweight, as are one of every four children in the 12-18 age group.
