A Brazilian woman who was jailed for an immigration violation isn't being allowed to give her 2-month-old son breast milk.

Those taking care of the infant say he's crying incessantly and keeps spitting up baby formula.

Ezequiel Oliveira says he spent hours at the Mecklenburg County jail on Monday trying to get a breast pump to 29-year-old Danielle Ferriera. The Brazilian woman has been in jail since Friday.

Jail spokeswoman Julia Rush says inmates generally are not allowed to provide breast milk without a court order. Rush says officials are aware of the situation but can't discuss conversations between inmates and medical staff.

Ferriera was initially arrested on a shoplifting charge, though Oliveira says Ferriera didn't know that her brother hid a CD or DVD in her baby stroller.
