New Breast Cancer Treatment

Women stricken with early breast cancer now have a new treatment option that can save their life and reduce the amount of time they receive radiation treatments.

The treatment is called mammosite brachytherapy catheter treatment. It's available at Carolina Radiation Medicine in Greenville. It involves inserting a catheter into the breast to deliver a dose of radiation. This procedure is done after a cancerous lump and some healthy tissues are removed. Doctors say this also cuts traditional radiation treatment time down to a few days instead of the standard six-week treatment period.

Doctors say mammosite brachytherapy catheter treatment costs about the same as a mastectomy and will allow women to maintain their appearance following surgery.
