Hyde County residents will soon have added protection with the opening of a new volunteer fire department. Ponzer Fire department passed inspection today from the State Fire Marshal's Office. They hope to have the fire department running at 12 noon, December 7th.
The process to establish a new fire department began two years ago after an area home was destroyed by fire.
For years that part of Hyde County was served by the Belhaven Fire Department, some 8 miles into Beaufort County. The new fire department is expected to work closely with Belhaven, Pungo River and Scranton fire departments.
In addition to the improved response time, Hyde County says residents and businesses within six road miles of the new fire station will be eligible for a significant reduction in insurance costs. Some estimate that may be as much as 20-25%.
