Residents on the Outer Banks had high winds and water to contend with. Portions of Highway 12 had standing water from ocean overwash more than a foot deep.
Commuters had to pick their path on the way to work along portions of the beach road, especially near the Kitty Hawk/Kill Devil Hills town line. Building materials and seaweed lined the streets in Kitty Hawk, too.
Department of Transportation crews cleared the way early in the day.
