Free Wireless Internet Service for School Children

The town of Manteo in Dare County is the first in the country to provide free wireless internet service for its school children. And what better way to make it known, than with Andy Griffith, Manteo's most famous resident.

Griffith, along with the Mayor, made the announcement Friday at the town's tree lighting ceremony. The partnership between Charter Communications and the town was born out of an effort to bring free internet access to traveling boaters moored in Manteo, and it grew from there.

Some children will even receive free computers from IBM and educational software. Residents without children in school will be able to access the wireless Web at thirty minute intervals for free.
