An official says East Carolina University is repaying $935,000 in student financial aid that was given without proper verification.
ECU official Judith Bailey has told a Faculty Senate meeting that a review ordered by federal auditors of financial aid shows 782 grant and loan awards were unverified. In most cases the tax forms attached to the applications lacked signatures.
ECU students received about 25,000 awards in the 2005-2006 academic year. Bailey says a new verification system has been instituted.
A former ECU employee and two students pleaded guilty earlier this year for their roles in a scheme to give cash kickbacks to students who applied for aid.
