Two weeks after Governor Mike Easley asked state residents to cut water consumption in half, the largest water utilities have cut use by nearly 30%.
Among the 25 largest public water systems, Union County showed the highest, at 48%...compared to Greenville which only showed a drop of 16%. In fact, Greenville ranks 23rd on the list. Onslow County is not far behind, at 16.7%.
Neither Greenville or Onslow County have instituted mandatory water restrictions because of the drought.
The latest drought information out today shows most of Eastern Carolina remains in an severe drought, while seven coastal counties are in moderate drought conditions.
