Retired Deputy Chief To Lead Jacksonville; Incumbents Lose On Council

A retired Jacksonville deputy police chief will take over the mayor's office.

Sammy Phillips easily defeated Jacqueline Forhan, 2260 to 721 in voting Tuesday.

Phillips is a current member of city council. Mayor Jan Bean Slagle decided not to run for another term of office.

While Phillips easily won, three of his fellow members of city council are losing in unofficial results.

Councilman Horace Mann was behind apparent winners for the two at large seats. Mann received 1342 votes, compared to Randy Thomas with 1710 votes and Alva Williams with 1454.

In Ward 1, incumbent Turner Blount trailed Jerome Willingham by just 20 votes.

And in Ward 2, incumbent Jerry Bittner was 14 votes behind Reva Sullivan.
