During rush hour or lunch time major thoroughfares in Jacksonville look like a parking lot.
That's why the city is stepping up its mass transit system. The bus service the city has now is called "The Loop." It has few stops and operates out of oversized vans, but doesn't service the base. The new Jacksonville transit will.
The base is just one of the new 150 stops. Starting Thursday the fare is $1.25 for adults and 60 cents for kids.
Anyone can ride the new service for free Thursday. The new transit service and buses are funded by state and federal grants.
