U.S. Highway 64 Reopens After Gas Leak Scare

Authorities have reopened U.S. 64 in Columbia after it was closed this morning due to a possible natural gas leak.

The Tyrell County Fire Department says Highway 64 was closed from the Creswell exit to the Travis exit.

Piedmont Natural Gas found no leak in the area and an "all clear" was given to open the highway again.

The fire department says a nearby day care center that was evacuated was also allowed to reopen.

Why were we told Highway 64 was closed all the way to Plymouth by a Tyrrell County deputy and firemen. We were stopped 30 minutes before being told that we would have to go by Edenton to reach Greenville.
