Customers of private water companies across the state are being told to use water only for essential household or businees use.
The North Carolina Utilities Commission says customers of the 577 private companies will not be allowed to water lawns and shrubbery, wash cars, and restaurants can only serve water to customers who request it.
The ban on nonessesntial water use takes effect November 1st. The utilities commission says violators could have their water shut off.
Today's order does not effect those customers on municipal water systems.
