Overcoming Language Barriers

Dozens of different foreign languages that people speak in Jacksonville are proving to be a tough wall to break through, especially for public services like police and schools.

Recent robberies of Hispanic residents went unreported for more than a week. What was the reason? Jacksonville Police say the victims were not sure they could communicate with officers. But several Spanish-speaking police, along with volunteers who speak other languages, are available to help. And Onslow County Schools’ “English as a Second Language” effort has bigger hurdles, with more than 50 different languages and dialects to translate, to help parents and students succeed.
