A major woods fire in south Greenville kept firefighters busy this afternoon. Crews from Greenville, Winterville & Eastern Pines spent most of the afternoon keeping the fast moving fire from spreading to nearby homes.
The main fire was in the South Hall subdivision off South Evans Street near the intersection with Fire Tower Road Fire crews were also on the other side of the railroad tracks with another fire.
For a time two different neighborhoods and a day care center were threatened. One resident tells us flames were just 50 feet from his house on Shefflied Court.
Firefighters say it began as a grass fire along the CSX Railroad tracks. Winds gusting at 14 miles per hour helped the blaze to quickly spread.
One firefighter suffered fatigue and exhaustion, but we're told he's okay now.
A state forestry helicopter helped keep today's fire from spreading.
