The North Carolina Air National Guard is deploying about 50 airmen and three cargo aircraft to California to help fight the state's spreading wildfires.
The aircraft are a part of the 145th Airlift Wing based at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. Two of the planes will be equipped to drop retardant along the leading edges of the fires.
The other will transport equipment and personnel.
The fires in southern California have burned more than 700 homes and forced at least 300,000 people to evacuate. They continue to spread by gusting winds across the state's parched landscape.
