A local labor union has less than a month to defeat what it says are flawed reasons to out-source nearly 300 civilian jobs at Camp Lejeune.
A study released last week by the military says work done by 276 maintenance employees at the world's largest Marine base should be handed over to civilian contractors. But local 20-65 of the American Federation of Government Employees is planning to appeal that study. Volunteer Trudie Turner says the decision is bad for the local economy, for workers who would lose higher-paying jobs, and ultimately for the Marines they are hired to serve.
While the government-mandated study took 18 months, the union and other workers only have 30 days to complete their appeal to Navy officials in Norfolk.
