It was a battle over education issues Monday between the Republican and Democratic candidates for North Carolina Governor.

Democratic incumbent Mike Easley squared off with Republican challenger Patrick Ballantine in an hour long debate seen on WITN. Ballantine accused the governor of failing to accelerate gains in the public schools. Easley said it was Ballantine who voted against budget bills that would have reduced class size and expanded a new preschool program.

Easley and Ballantine are scheduled to debate one more time.
