Governor Pardons Man Wrongly Imprisoned For 18 Years

A man imprisoned for 18 years for a rape he didn't commit has been officially declared innocent.

A judge released 39-year-old Dwayne Allen Dail from prison in August after DNA showed he didn't rape a 12-year-old girl.

Now, Governor Mike Easley has signed a pardon of innocence for Dail, who was convicted in 1989 in Wayne County Superior Court.

Dail refused a plea bargain before his trial that would have put him on probation for pleading guilty to a misdemeanor.

The pardon is the fifth granted by Easley since he took office in 2001. Dail now is eligible to apply for a total of $360,000 compensation from the state.

By my calculations $20,000 per year, for 18 years in prison. Give me a break!!! He could have earned more than that by working just about any job!! What about his being deprived of his freedom for 18 years. This is absolutely ridiculous! This poor man would have never gone to jail if he had had enough money to buy the right lawyer and judge (yes, judge.. buy a judge- you heard me) before his trial. Once again the poor suffer under our system of "justice". This happens more than the average person knows. We need citizens to watch the court system, I urge you all to go and spend a day in court to see how it works (or rather doesn't work). The court system is indeed "broke down" and in need of repair. It is the rich folks (black, white and all races) taking care of other rich folks. The poor man or woman gets screwed every time.

$360,000.00 for 18 years is a complete discrace. If you have been wrongfully imprisioned, especially for this long of a time, it should be #360,000 per year of imprisonment. Stand up legislators and correct this problem.
