No one was injured when a contractor drilled into an eight-inch gas line today in Cary and set off a fireball that burned a truck.
Stores in a nearby shopping center have been evacuated as a precaution. A branch of Wake Med hospital also is diverting incoming ambulances.
Cary town spokeswoman Susan Moran says the flames shot about 100 feet in the air and were visible for miles.
The fire is at Kildaire Farm and Tryon Roads where the contractor was working on traffic signals. Crews from the gas company are trying to find the break and shut it off.
