A dump truck collided with a passenger car late this morning, closing down Highway 11 in Pitt County in both directions.
It happened around 11:30 this morning at the intersection of Highway 11 & Dennis McLawhorn Road, just north of Ayden.
The Ayden fire and rescue department had to remove both the front and rear doors on the driver's side of the car in order to remove the driver.
Ayden police say the car tried to pull across Highway 11 and was hit by the dump truck. The driver of the car was cited for failure to yield.
Police say as a precaution, an EastCare helicopter flew the car's driver to Pitt Memorial Hospital. The driver ended up with only minor injuries.
Both directions of the four lane highway were shut down as rescuers loaded the victim onto the helicopter.
