North Carolina energy officials say half a million dollars remains in a fund to provide rebates to people who replace old appliances with newer, more energy-efficient ones.

The Sun Journal of New Bern reported Saturday that the money is left over from $8.8 million provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. More than 62,000 appliances were purchased statewide.

North Carolina Energy Office spokesman Seth Efron says some people who applied for the rebates did not qualify, leading to about $500,000 left over.

To be eligible, consumers must replace older appliances with Energy Star-qualified models that use about 25 percent less electricity.

Rebates range from $75 for dishwashers and freezers to $300 for several appliances including central air conditioners.

OK, so I replace my dryer (I get maybe $75 for an item that cost _ $300), replace my two refrig. and I get $150 for $1800 spent, replace the dish washer and get $75 for something that cost around $500, and get $300 for and AC that cost around $2500 to replace. So my "rebate" will be $600 on an investment of $5100 (12% Savings), I can buy a lot of electricity $4500. I'll wait until replacements are needed.

If all these so called energy efficient "things" would pay for themselves people shouldn't have to be "bribed" to purchase them. If they won't why the taxpayers should get stuck with the bill. Isn't it time for people to start taking some personal responsibility for themselves??
