Usually busy beaches on Hatteras Island were fairly quiet Wednesday afternoon, but Highway 12 was jam packed as thousands of visitors evacuated the area.
Aaron Ostwald was camping on Hatteras Island and had plans to bike and enjoy the beach through the weekend, but was forced to have his vacation cut short. "We knew it was coming, going to be here by Thursday so we were camping out and the rangers told us they were going to close."
Authorities say they have concerns about high waves and ocean overwash that could possibly make Highway 12 dangerous or impassable.
