Carteret County officials have issued a state of emergency, closed schools, called for some evacuations and are opening shelters.

Carteret County officials have issued a state of emergency.

They are calling for the "evacuation of the medically fragile population and low lying areas, manufactured and other fragile housing; particularly South River, North River and areas east of the North River Bridge. This includes all areas subject to sound side flooding."

Carteret County schools will be closed on Thursday and Friday.

Newport Middle School will open as a shelter at noon on Thursday. A special needs shelter will open at Leon Mann Senior Center at 8 a.m. on Thursday.
