North Carolina Sen. Elizabeth Dole has some
tough words for the Navy.
Dole says the Navy failed to talk with local officials while
considering new alternatives for a practice landing field.
The Republican also says in a letter to Navy Secretary Donald
Winter that the Navy should examine bringing more Navy assets to
the state if the landing field winds up in North Carolina.
The Navy and state officials had met dating back to March to
look for alternative sites for a location where jet pilots could
practice nighttime carrier landings. Six new sites were presented
to Navy Secretary Donald Winter for consideration and made public
by state officials last week.
Winter is re-examining the Navy's choices after its preferred site in Beaufort and Washington counties was roundly criticized due
to a nearby wildlife refuge.
