A 12-year-old Lenoir County boy is credited for staying calm and calling 911 after his older brother cracked open his head Tuesday in an accident.

Trey Turner was lifting weights, training for football, when a bar fell across his forehead. His younger brother Zachary was the only other person home.

Zachary was able to calm his own fears and listened to 911 operators as they told him exactly what to do. The boy grabbed a towel and applied pressure so his older brother did not lose any more blood.

Trey received multiple stitches at the hospital and is going to be okay. From now on he says he'll weight train only with a spotter.

The boys' mother says Zach is a hero for how well he handled the situation.

Ann thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. Without you guiding my brothers God only knows what could have happened had you not answered or had he not called. But I do hope you understand that we as a family are very thankful for everyone that helped. My mom could hardly speak when the news interviewed her but she is as well very grateful.

Dear Turner Family, I am the 911 dispatcher that took Zach's call. I am so glad everything turned out well for Trey and he is going to be OK. My greatest compliments to Zach for being strong and brave so he could help his brother. All of the dispatchers that day were so proud of him for the outstanding job he did to control the bleeding and how he remained calm even though he was on the verge of hysteria! I am glad I was able to help your family during a crisis such as this and know that we are always available.
