Training for Disaster

Fifteen New Bern firefighters recently completed a year long technical rescue training class that will enable them to perform rescues far different from routine ones.

As part of Governor Mike Easley's proclamation of September 2004 as "Ready North Carolina Month," the firefighters have been trained to prepare for all types of rescues ranging from terrorist attacks to a major building collapse. Funds provided by the Homeland Security grant help pay for their training. Since September 11, firefighters and police officers in various cities have learned to work together during an emergency.

City officials have also authorized the fire department to build a four-story training tower, and small residential center to practice their technical rescues.
