Onslow County's hospital wants County Commissioners to do the right deed. They want them to hand over the deed to the hospital so they can apply for $50 million to start renovations that will eventually lead to a brand new public hospital.
Commissioners got that request at a briefing Wednesday, but one commissioner says the timing for that request will make it a political hot potato with a contentious election just around the corner. That brought strong responses from hospital board members who've turned Onslow Memorial around in just four years and want to chart a new course for the future.
The hospital wants $50 million for a new emergency room and surgery suite. That would be the first part of a $100 million renovation that would totally replace the existing over crowed and outdated hospital on Western Boulevard.
