Woman Gets Life Sentence In Husband's Death

A Clayton woman has been sentenced to life in prison today after pleading guilty to murder in the death of her Navy reservist husband.

Twenty-seven-year-old Monique Berkley of Clayton entered the plea in Wake County Superior Court in an agreement with prosecutors. Prosecutors had planned to seek a death sentence if Berkley had been convicted of first-degree murder in an alleged plot to collect life insurance.

Twenty-year-old Andrew Canty pleaded guilty last month to murder as a jury was being selected for his first-degree murder trial.

Police say the woman and Canty were lovers who planned to kill 46-year-old Paul Berkley when he returned from a deployment in 2005. He was shot in the head at a Raleigh park.

Prosecutors said Canty had moved in with Monique Berkley after her husband left.
