NC Students Keeping Pace On Reading, Math Scores

Test scores show that North Carolina's fourth- and eighth-graders are generally keeping pace with students nationwide on math and reading test scores.

According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress, North Carolina students continue to perform statistically above the national average on mathematics. On reading scores, the state's students who were tested are on par with the rest of the nation.

State schools Superintendent June Atkinson says the results are
encouraging but more must be done to help students improve in
reading.

The test results come out every two years and are usually cited as the best indicator of how each state's students compared with other states and the nation as a whole. A survey sample of North Carolina students takes the test.
